Sonate di Gravicembalo (1754)
New! Elaine writes about her discovery of Paradies (the spelling the composer used later in life): "Although I was born in New York, Italian was my first language, and I always enjoyed playing a lot of Italian music. When I became a student at Oberlin, my piano teacher suggested I play Scarlatti. Upon my arrival in Italy to study the harpsichord, my teacher suggested working on Scarlatti. Follow-up studies in Boston also brought up the works of Scarlatti. There had to be other composers for the harpsichord than Scarlatti!"
Elaine's search for another Italian composer brought her to Paradies, an Italian living in London and writing in the style of Scarlatti. This set of sonatas, performed on the wonderful Kirckman harpsichord from Williamsburg, gives a wonderful view of 18th century sensibilties.
